Onset is the classic staging harbor for the Cape Cod Canal — a friendly village green above a working harbor, the obvious place to stage for a fair current through the ditch.
Anchor in the designated area in 8–12 ft of mud, or take a harbormaster mooring (Ch 71). Protection is good from the north and west but the harbor opens south and southwest, so the summer sea breeze puts a chop in by afternoon; it settles at night. The whole point is timing: stage here, then ride the fair current through the canal at slack-plus.
Onset village has an old-fashioned bandstand, ice cream, and a beach — a pleasant place to wait for the tide with a night ashore.
Hazards & cautions. Strong reversing current runs near the Cape Cod Canal approach — plan your arrival and departure for slack or a fair tide. The harbor is open to the south and southwest, where a sea breeze builds a chop by afternoon.
