Local knowledge

Marion's Sippican Harbor is a genteel, deep, well-sheltered harbor at the head of Buzzards Bay — home to Tabor Academy and Beverly Yacht Club and one of the tidiest villages on the bay.

Take a rental mooring from Barden's Boat Yard or the harbormaster (Ch 68), or anchor in the outer harbor in mud. The inner harbor is very well protected; the outer harbor opens south, so a southerly makes it lumpy — work in for shelter. Provisions, a couple of restaurants and a classic New England town green are a short dinghy in.

It's a calm, civilized overnight and a good jumping-off point for the run down the bay to Cuttyhunk or through the canal.

Hazards & cautions. Open south down the harbor toward the bay — a southerly builds fetch and the outer harbor gets lumpy; favor the inner harbor for the flattest night. The upper harbor shoals; deeper boats stay outside the inner moorings.
