Padanaram — properly Apponagansett Bay — is a big, friendly harbor on the west shore of Buzzards Bay, fronting the tidy village of South Dartmouth with a well-known yard and yacht club.
Anchor south of the swing bridge outside the mooring field in 8–12 ft of mud, or take a rental mooring (Ch 68). Protection is good from the west and north, but the bay is wide open to the south — and Buzzards Bay's afternoon southwesterly is famous for building a short, steep chop, so expect an afternoon slop that lies down at night. The village, chandlery and restaurants are an easy dinghy to the town wharf.
It's a sociable, well-serviced stop; just pick your weather, because the sea breeze here means business.
Hazards & cautions. The bay is open to the south down Buzzards Bay — the notorious afternoon southwesterly builds a real chop, and a true southerly makes the outer anchorage rough. The swing bridge to the inner harbor has restricted openings; the inner basin is for shoal draft.
