Mattapoisett is a tidy, tree-shaded village on the north shore of Buzzards Bay — Ned's Point Light marking the approach, a classic wooden-boat mooring field and one of the friendlier stops on the bay.
Come in on the buoyed channel past the ledges and anchor off town in a generous 13–17 ft, or take a Mattapoisett Boatyard guest mooring (hail Ch 68, launch runs mid-May to Columbus Day). Holding is good in sand and mud; the catch is the reliable Buzzards Bay southwesterly, which slops up the open harbor by afternoon and lies down at night. The village and the boatyard are a short dinghy to the town wharf.
Hazards & cautions. A buoyed natural channel threads numerous rocks and ledges at the entrance (Cormorant Rock, Mattapoisett Ledge) — the bottom is broken, so proceed cautiously where the charted depth is less than 6 ft over your draft. The harbor opens south and southwest, so the famous Buzzards Bay afternoon sea breeze builds a chop across the field.
