Summer Flounder (Fluke)

Also known as fluke.

A left-eyed flatfish and one of the most sought-after species on the coast — an ambush predator that lies on the bottom and takes both baits and moving lures along channel edges and drop-offs.

When they run

A warm-season fish; present and targeted roughly May through September/October, moving inshore in summer and offshore as the water cools.

Where to find them

Hard sand and sand/mud bottom, salt-marsh creeks and seagrass — concentrating along channel edges, drop-offs, inlets and structure edges.

Widespread; Block Island's Southwest Ledge area, the lower bays and the Sounds' sandy channel edges are traditional producers.
