A structure-oriented temperate reef fish that holds on rock bottom near reefs, ledges, wrecks and jetties. Migrates offshore in fall and returns inshore in spring; larger males show a distinctive bluish hump.
Best inshore roughly late May through September; fish move onto shallow reefs to spawn in spring/early summer and pull offshore as the water cools.
A true reef fish tied to rock piles, reefs, ledges, wrecks, shoals and artificial structure; deeper wrecks and reefs in the cold months.
Strong across all six; Block Island Sound wrecks/reefs and Narragansett Bay are noted producers.
