Three Mile Harbor is East Hampton's anchorage — a long, sheltered inlet off Gardiners Bay, protected all round once you're inside, with marinas, a famous harborside restaurant or two, and a quieter feel than Sag Harbor.
Enter between the jetties on the marked channel and anchor in the designated area in 8–11 ft of mud, or take a marina mooring (Ch 09). The surrounding land gives shelter from every direction, so it stays calm in almost any wind — a reliable all-weather stop on the East End. The head of the harbor shoals, so deeper boats keep to the lower and middle sections.
It's the mellow alternative to the Sag Harbor scene, with good holding, easy shelter, and a launch or dinghy ride to dinner ashore.
Hazards & cautions. The entrance from Gardiners Bay is jettied and shoals to the sides — hold the marked channel. The harbor is long and shoals toward its head; deeper boats stay in the lower and middle harbor. Otherwise all-round protected.
