Coecles Harbor, on the east side of Shelter Island, is the quiet gem of the Peconics — a big, nearly landlocked anchorage with excellent holding and all-round protection, and a fraction of the crowd of the name harbors nearby.
Follow the marked channel in past the shoals, then anchor almost anywhere in 9–13 ft of thick mud. The surrounding land gives shelter from every direction, so it stays flat in almost any forecast — a genuine hurricane hole and a favorite for a peaceful night. Coecles Harbor Marina on the south shore has fuel, water and a small store.
This is the anchorage to run to when the wind pipes up or you just want silence — protected, roomy, and blessedly undeveloped.
Hazards & cautions. The entrance channel is well marked but narrow, with shoals close on both sides — hold the buoys carefully on the way in. Inside is deep and open; simply pick your spot.
