Local knowledge

Newport is the capital of American sailing, and its harbor shows it — a wall of masts, launches crisscrossing at all hours, and Fort Adams standing guard over the entrance. It's busy, it's not cheap, and it's worth it.

Pick up a mooring from Oldport or one of the marinas (hail on Ch 16), or anchor in the designated area over toward Brenton Cove in 12–18 ft of good mud. The prevailing summer southwesterly runs right up the harbor and kicks a chop by mid-afternoon; tuck as far west and south as the moorings allow for the flattest night.

Ashore is the point: Thames Street, the waterfront restaurants, the mansions along the Cliff Walk. Every marina runs a launch, so you can leave the dinghy on the boat and just hail a ride in.

Hazards & cautions. The harbor is thick with mooring fields, launch traffic and ferries — anchoring is confined to a marked area south toward Brenton Cove and Fort Adams. A summer southwesterly funnels straight up the harbor and builds a short chop by afternoon.

Cruiser reports from the anchorage

Editor's note

Coast Pilot describes Newport as a major harbor of refuge on the east passage of Narragansett Bay, well protected except from the south; extensive moorings limit swinging room.

No cruiser reports yet. If you've anchored here, be the first — your note helps the next boat in.
