Dutch Harbor sits on the quiet west side of Jamestown, looking out over the west passage of the bay toward the Newport Bridge — a mellow, unhurried alternative to the Newport scramble across the island.
Pick up a rental mooring from Dutch Harbor Boat Yard (Ch 09); anchoring room is tight between the field and the marked cable area. Protection is decent from the east and north but the harbor is open to the west and southwest, so the usual summer sea breeze puts a chop in by afternoon — fine for a night, lumpy in a hard blow.
It's a five-minute drive or a pleasant walk across to Jamestown village and the east-side restaurants; the appeal here is the calm and the sunsets over the west passage.
Hazards & cautions. Open west across the west passage — a strong southwesterly builds an afternoon chop. Anchoring room is limited by the mooring field and a cable area; take a rental mooring if you can.
