Mystic is a destination in its own right — the Seaport museum, the drawbridge in the middle of town, and a river lined with marinas and restaurants. Getting there is half the experience.
Work up the river on the marked channel, timing the bascule bridge opening (monitor Ch 16) and minding the current in the narrows. It's a dock-and-slip harbor — take a berth at one of the downtown marinas or a lower-river mooring; anchoring room is scarce and the river is well protected all round by its banks. Once tied up, you're in the heart of town.
Come for the Seaport, the shipyard and the walkable downtown; treat the bridge schedule as part of the plan and enjoy one of the most atmospheric river stops on the coast.
Hazards & cautions. The Mystic River carries a fixed and a bascule bridge with scheduled openings and a railroad bridge — plan around the opening schedule, and mind current in the narrow channel. Depths in the river are modest; hold the marked channel. Anchoring room upriver is minimal.
