Huntington Harbor is well sheltered from northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest winds. Check the wind-protection rose above for every direction.
Huntington Harbor is primarily a mooring or dockage harbor — Willis Marine transient (first night free) — Ch 09, with little or no room to anchor free.
Hail on VHF Ch 09 (Willis Marine Service Ch 09).
Reservable — Willis Marine transient moorings — call ahead or hail Ch 09. It fills on summer weekends.
Huntington Harbor reaches two miles inland from Huntington Bay, a nearly landlocked hole ringed by marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs — protected from just about everything once you're up inside.
Thread the marked channel in past Huntington Harbor Light and take a transient mooring from Willis Marine (hail Ch 09; first night's often free), or anchor in the federal special anchorage off the Town Dock clear of the channel. Holding is good in mud and the shelter is all-round bar the northerly entrance. Full services — fuel, provisions, restaurants — are close at hand in Halesite.
Hazards & cautions. A boulder reef on the west side of the entrance runs out to Huntington Harbor Light, with a covered obstruction east of the light and a reported wreck between Buoys 9 and 11 — hold the narrow buoyed channel, which carries only about 8 ft (some buoys are private and seasonal). 5 mph limit.
NOAA Coast Pilot notes Huntington Harbor at the southwest end of Huntington Bay is entered by a marked channel leading to an anchorage off the Town Dock about two miles above the entrance, with a federal special anchorage.
