The Captain Islands off Greenwich give a quiet lee close to one of the busiest shores on the Sound — a low cluster of islands to tuck behind for lunch or a settled night, with the town beaches on Great Captain and Island Beach nearby.
Anchor in the lee of the islands in 8–12 ft of sand and mud for good holding and shelter from the north and west. Like all the Sound's north-shore anchorages it's open south, so pick a northwesterly or a calm forecast — a southerly makes it lumpy. There are no services here; it's an anchor-and-swim spot with a beach ashore.
A pleasant, low-key escape a short hop from Greenwich and Stamford, best in settled or offshore weather.
Hazards & cautions. Open to the south down the Sound — a southerly or the afternoon southwesterly builds fetch and it gets rolly. Shoals and rocks lie between the islands; hold the marked approaches and mind the big tide.
