Milford is a snug, protected harbor behind a tight breakwater entrance — a mooring harbor fronting a lively downtown, and a handy stop on the Connecticut shore between Norwalk and New Haven.
Thread the narrow entrance between the breakwaters carefully; it shoals to the sides and the big tide runs a current through it. Inside, take a harbormaster or marina mooring (Ch 68) — the field fills most of the harbor and anchoring room is scarce. It's well protected from the north and west but a strong southerly works at the entrance.
Milford's downtown green, restaurants and shops are a short walk from the town dock — an easy, well-served overnight once you're through the entrance.
Hazards & cautions. The entrance between the breakwaters is narrow and shoals to the sides — hold the marked channel, and mind the strong current on the big tide and the breakwater in an onshore sea. Largely a mooring harbor; anchoring room is minimal.
