Greenport is the North Fork's harbor town — a walkable village of oyster bars, a working waterfront and the Shelter Island ferry, with a nearly landlocked hurricane hole tucked in behind it at Stirling Basin.
The village slips at Mitchell Park put you steps from Front Street; for shelter, thread the private-buoyed channel into Stirling Basin, controlled by the harbormaster on Ch 09, where the surrounding land gives near all-round protection. Full services — fuel, pump-out, a first-rate yard — ring the basin. It's busy and it fills on summer weekends, so reserve or hail ahead.
Hazards & cautions. Stirling Basin is reached only by a narrow channel marked by private seasonal buoys leading northwest off Greenport Harbor — hold it carefully. A 5-foot breakwater runs southeast from Youngs Point (lit at its outer end); the harbor is a 5 mph No-Discharge Zone with up to ~2 kn of current off Fanning Point on the approach.
NOAA Coast Pilot notes Greenport Harbor is formed on the northeast by a breakwater off Youngs Point, with an entrance channel leading northwest to an anchorage inside Stirling Basin; the harbormaster controls mooring and berthing.
