City Island is a salty little maritime enclave at the western end of the Sound — a street of chandleries, sail lofts and seafood joints in the Bronx, and the biggest recreational boating center in New York, wrapped in guest moorings.
This is a mooring harbor, not an anchorage — grab a guest ball from Harlem or Morris Yacht Club and hail the launch on Ch 72, and you're a short ride from City Island Avenue. Holding in the soft mud is good, but you'll be on a mooring; the harbor is well sheltered east and west and opens south down Eastchester Bay toward Throgs Neck. Fuel and full yard services are all on the island.
Hazards & cautions. Big Tom (covered 2 ft, buoyed) and Cuban Ledge (covers at half-tide) guard the Eastchester Bay entrance, with many rocks, shoals and wrecks and boulder-fringed shores — hold the buoyed channel. Current at the City Island–Rodman Neck bridge can exceed 1.5 kn.
NOAA Coast Pilot calls City Island Harbor (Hart Island Roads) well sheltered from easterly and westerly winds and an important anchorage in the western end of Long Island Sound, with guest moorings and full supplies at City Island.
