Atlantic Cod

Also known as cod, codfish.

A heavy-bodied groundfish of rocky slopes and ledges in cold water. In recent years feeding and spawning aggregations have re-established off Block Island — a wintertime prospect there rather than a nearshore bay/Sound target.

When they run

A cold-water/winter fishery in this area; nearshore aggregations off Block Island show up in the winter months.

How to catch them

  • Deep bottom fishing at anchor or drift
  • Jigging (diamond / cod jigs)
  • Bait rigs with teasers over hard bottom

Where to find them

Rocky slopes, ledges, boulder/rough bottom and wrecks with coarse sediment in cold water.

Mainly a Block Island Sound / offshore Block Island wintertime prospect — not reliable in the inner bays and Sounds.
